Suzy Hendrix

Artist Biography

Suzy is a multimedia artist currently residing in Memphis TN. With a focus on sculptural art, Suzy incorporates cast glass, steel, mosaic, concrete, and stained glass into much of her work. Her early career focused on music and performance art. For over a decade she traveled extensively throughout Europe and Asia. Her interest in public art was piqued while touring with the performance art driven avant garde troupe, Urban Sax. This experience allowed her to perform in many great architectural wonders, such as Mont St Michel in France, Al Haramba in Spain, Chartes Cathedral of France, Saint Patrick’s Cathedral of New York. Her style fluctuates across centuries of muses. Travel is her muse. Her inspiration comes directly from that. Suzy is currently working with at risk teens as artist in residence at Carpenter Art Garden.

Artist Statement

"My work is often an architectural reliquary of sorts. I am inspired by how architectural styles reflect the times and locations from which they sprung.

The nostalgic yearning of an ephemeral past, memories soon lost, covered with layers of new stories, new techniques, new dreams: in fact, a completely new cast of characters. These characters are my art, retelling stories tinted in new colors, old shapes reworked into a modern version of the past. Using techniques that are at times medieval, and at times cutting edge technology and materials, I strive to create harmony and grace with my work.

Currently I am creating a second mosaic garden in an underserved community. I work with local teens on designing and creating places of magic.
