Walter Early

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Walter Early (b. 1983) developed an interest in art at the University of Kentucky, from where he received a BFA. He continued his studies at the University of Notre Dame, earning an MFA in 2011. Since that time Early’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and he has lectured on art in the United States, Canada, and Honduras. In 2012, with support from the Henry Moore Foundation, Early was resident artist at the Museum of Steel Sculpture in Coalbrookdale, England. His work has recently been part of two-person exhibitions at the Piper Gallery in London, England (2013) and The Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft in Louisville, KY (2014).

Early’s creative work is series-based exploring object valuation systems. Research revolves around material and provenance justifications for preserving objects in domestic collections. Specifically investigating the ability of objects of seemingly little significance to act as a memory aid and surrogate for the corporeal. Similar to still life painting and photography, found objects are often utilized or referenced as a metaphor for life cycles. Formally the work draws from the language of fragments; using incomplete forms to allude to a larger whole.

This sculpture is currently on Exhibition at Expree Credit Union in Frankfort, KY as part of the JSP Art in Public Places Program.
