Sherwin Rio

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Interdisciplinary artist Sherwin Rio uses visual metaphors to expose “misvisibility,” the tactical obfuscation of history, culture, and society. Rio has exhibited as a solo and collaborative artist in California, Florida, Virginia, New Mexico, and Pennsylvania.

In 2018, Rio received the San Francisco Art Institute’s Ella King Torrey Award for Innovation & Excellence in the Arts, the MFA Outstanding Graduate Award, and the Outstanding Graduate Award in New Genres. He also received the 2017 Jack K. and Gertrude Murphy Fellowship Award from the San Francisco Foundation.

Rio is a 2019-2020 Graduate Fellow at the Headlands Center for the Arts and current 2019 International Sculpture Center Artist in Residence at Josephine Sculpture Park in Frankfort, KY. He previously held an Exhibitions Fellowship at Root Division (2018-2019), an Internship at the Carlos Villa Estate (2018-2019), and a Co-directorship of the Diego Rivera Gallery (2017-2018).

He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking with a minor in Art History from the University of Florida in 2014 and a dual Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art and Master of Arts in History and Theory of Contemporary Art degree from the San Francisco Art Institute in Spring 2019.
