Michael O'Khaen

Artist Biography

My artistic practice offers a critical but playful view on ecological concerns, drawing inspiration from the dynamic interplay between the arts and natural sciences. My goal is to incite fresh perspectives and insights into the living world, with the aim of heightening public consciousness about environmental challenges, without the guilt factor. Though my techniques, processes, and materials may significantly differ, they are all united by the theme of nature, reflecting a shared interest in the intricate relationships between species and their surroundings. Intrigued by the concepts of introduced, displaced, and invasive species, I personally embody these ideas as a recent American citizen originally from France. In the context of "The Next Bluegrass," I present a project without fixed specifications. The eventual sculpture will resemble the proposed sketch, yet its creation will be intuitive, unfolding directly on-site with locally sourced materials. I envision a temporary residence as the nucleus of this artwork's emergence, enabling me to immerse myself in the specific locale, influencing its structure as I build. The sculpture's scale, presence, and method of creation invite public interaction. The visual contrast is designed to prompt engagement, encouraging people to capture images with the piece, reach out and touch it, explore its construction, and maybe even climb a little on it. By creating an art project that inspire engagement, my aspiration is to enhance the comprehension of the relationships between the public and their environment.

Artist Statement

"My work is the result of an educated artistic process, inspired by a background in natural sciences. As an artist-researcher, I commit to observe and convey the dynamic interplay between Humanity and Nature. Each artwork I create reflects a deep connection to its specific environment, integrating contextual elements that hold both symbolic and physical significance.

A defining feature of my work is the extensive use of wood, often combined with other organic, mineral, or manufactured materials. These elements are crafted into composite objects, embodying my signature aesthetic—a fusion of contemporary design with raw, nature-based components. I seek to bridge the realms of figuration and abstraction in purposeful creations designed to resonate universally.

Born from my long-time addiction to wilderness immersions is the need to express the mysterious blend of attraction and aversion that exists between me and other living beings. In my early years, it felt instinctual to pick up a piece of wood and carve it with a knife, a way to articulate my experiences with wildlife. Then I gathered materials from nature, constructing larger and more elaborate structures meant to be shared with others. This interaction between my creations and the community was deeply meaningful and satisfying, eventually becoming my life’s driving force.

The Next Bluegrass is an urban-scaled example of this process, made mostly with reclaimed construction materials and showing a contrasted, colorful design inspired by a local plant. This sculpture is intended to serve as a beacon for Kentucky's biodiversity."

The Next Bluegrass
Statement

The Next Bluegrass pays homage to the iconic Kentucky bluegrass flower, although not originally native to North America. This sculpture stands as a tribute to the migrants, both people and species, who shaped the present tapestry of biological and cultural diversity. It symbolizes the forthcoming generations of life forms that will define the evolving connections between nature and culture.
