October JSP Artist in Residence: Daniel Shieh
JSP welcomes Daniel Shieh as the Artist in Residence for the month of October!
Daniel Shieh is an artist from Taiwan. He creates interactive artworks that alter the power dynamics between participants. He received an MDes in Art, Design, and the Public Domain at Harvard Graduate School of Design.
“Through manipulating perspective, sense of distance, and visibility, I construct physical environments where the power dynamics of being with another person is rewired.” Daniel shares. “Often combining different levels of intimacy, such as standing at a distance from someone yet feeling your bodies merge, my work encourages different interpretations of another person’s humanity to occupy your mind simultaneously, offering a layered perception of the Other—as an individual who exists independent of you and as a being that mirrors your consciousness. Centering on the act of mutual perception, my work reaffirms our existence in each other’s minds.”
Daniel’s JSP residency is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Windgate Foundation.
