Nature Nook: Gillian Shepard’s Eagle Scout Project

Josephine Sculpture Park is now home to the “Nature Nook” – a shelter with a concrete floor, roof for shade and weather protection, two benches, a storage bin that can double as a table, and information about native wildlife and plants.

Gillian Shepard completed the nature nook in spring 2022 as her Eagle Scout project with Troop 269 in Shelbyville, KY. We interviewed Gillian about her project:

Why did you choose JSP as your project site?

“I have been coming to JSP with my family since I was a kid. It helped introduce me to nature and art which has become a big part of my life.”

Why did you choose to construct the nature nook?

“Learning about nature and our environment was a big part of scouting for me. I wanted to provide a place for others to learn about the same things.”

What did you gain or learn from this experience?

“I learned a lot about time management and fundraising. This gave me a lot of experience with managing other people, materials, and funds.”

What do you hope park visitors gain or learn from experiencing the nature nook?

“I hope people are able to use my project as a creative space. Not only to learn about nature but for other activities at the park.”

Gillian will attend the University of Louisville this fall. Please send her lots of gratitude for the Nature Nook and congratulations on her Eagle Scout project and college journey ahead!
