“Mother and Child” by Bridget Beck – JSP Artist in Residence – June 2021

“I want it to be a painting, and a drawing, and a sculpture, and a playground all at the same time.” – Bridget Beck

During June 2021, Josephine Sculpture Park welcomed South Dakota-based artist, Bridget Beck, as Artist in Residence. Bridget dove into the JSP community, creating new traditions like our (now) inaugural pie making competition, introducing her husband and child to the residency experience, and making an incredibly authentic, profound, and simply FUN sculpture that the park is blessed to exhibit. Join us in reflecting on Bridget’s residency in these Sculpture Saturday video interviews:

Week 1: Welding, Painting & Site Prep

“This sculpture is a woman: a brave woman, a fierce woman who has never been afraid of saying who she is…”

Week 2: Pie, Family & Legs

“I want it to be a painting, and a drawing, and a sculpture, and a playground all at the same time.”

Week 3: Mother and Child

“I’ve never made a sculpture like this before… I think that, for me, having a place to experiment with new ideas – it is only going to make my sculptures better in the future. Because risk taking is really important as far as creative growth goes, and I have been starving for the opportunity to leap forward.”

Bridget’s residency is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Windgate Foundation. Visit the artist at bridgetbeckartist.com. Plan your visit to Bridget’s sculpture and JSP at josephinesculpturepark.org. Thank you!
