JSP Week-Long Juneteenth Celebration: Kiah Celeste (KY)
We celebrate Juneteenth this week with Louisville-based artist Kiah Celeste, JSP 2020 Artist in Residence!
The debut of my Slavery Veteran Merchandise line serendipitously falls upon the week of Juneteenth. As the US fails to acknowledge the resilience of Black Americans, here are the first in a line ironically appropriating war veteran merchandise, and the appreciation America has for the military but not for those who involuntarily built this country.
Each shirt will be custom made to order, thrift sourced for environmental sustainability. Never buy new! Each week half of the proceeds will be donated to a different organization for racial justice. This week’s proceeds go to the The Marsha P. Johnson Institute.
*Hats, mugs and bumper stickers in the works!
Focus On Race Relations – FORR Frankfort and Josephine Sculpture Park (JSP) partner this week to celebrate Juneteenth, the nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. We encourage others to post throughout this week leading up to Juneteenth (June 19) using #juneteenthky. This week, JSP and FORR will elevate black and African American voices and art, share anti-racism resources and discourse, and host a roundtable to discuss local race issues and solutions in Frankfort/Franklin County, KY.
