JSP Artist-in-Residence Peyton Scott Russell founded SPRAYFINGER Graffiti Camps, which are designed to help participants learn about graffiti as an exciting art form. Education in history, letter structure, aerosol techniques, and execution of personal and collaborative murals will be the focus. Students will experiment in drawing, collage, aerosol, stencil, and murals. Students will exhibit their skills with their work on GRAPHOLOGYHENGE, Peyton’s sculpture in exhibit at Josephine Sculpture Park.

SPRAYFINGER has four key teaching components: History, Drawing, Collage, and Aerosol.

• The History of graffiti is discussed by its foundation as a youth lead movement, started in the late 1960’s. It focuses on the pioneers and their motivations for creating it. We also discuss the many new and current approaches, sub-groups, and reasons for graffiti since its beginnings.

• In Drawing, participants learn the difference between writing and drawing letters. Students learn to draw and manipulate letters from my quadrilateral grid technique, which can involve an entire relearning of the alphabet.

• The Collage component is using a variety colored paper and paints as a mixed media to cut, layer, and glue these materials together creating interesting letter designs. It’s usually the most satisfying component as it yields amazing results.

• Aerosol and spray-paint is the apex of the graffiti culture. Students learn “Can Control” by using various hand and finger pressures, speed, distance, and angles, as well as the use of several aerosol nozzles (caps), the artists may create a wide range of spraying techniques to bring his or her letters and art alive.

Peyton shares, “My process for teaching this exciting and controversial art form has opened many eyes to its artistic merits. Graffiti has an uncanny way of reaching people, drawing them in, and allowing them to express themselves in ways they never thought possible.”

Tuition is $250 per student. RESERVE YOUR SPACE BY CLICKING THE BUTTON BELOW. Tuition includes all materials, equipment, and supplies. Students must bring their own lunches, and we recommend they bring a refillable water bottle. We will provide light snacks. Students are required to show up ready to learn and be open for a fun and challenging experience. Wear clothes that can get dirty and bring a creative mind!
