SELF-GUIDED Night Sky Tour: Hubble Space Telescope 30th Anniversary

April 25 @ 8:00 pm - 11:59 pm

Night Sky Tour: Hubble Space Telescope 30th Anniversary
Saturday, April 25
8pm
For now, our monthly Night Sky Tour is going VIRTUAL with suggested self-guided activities to explore the night sky from the comfort of your backyard!
2020 marks the Hubble Space Telescope’s 30th year in orbit. NASA shares: “Hubble, the observatory, is the first major optical telescope to be placed in space… Above the distortion of the atmosphere, far above rain clouds and light pollution, Hubble has an unobstructed view of the universe. Scientists have used Hubble to observe the most distant stars and galaxies as well as the planets in our solar system.”
Head to NASA’s website here to see what Hubble saw on your birth date!  Enter the month and date, and share the results with your friends on social media using #Hubble30 and tag Josephine Sculpture Park! Then, go outside, and observe the night sky – with your naked eye or with your telescope (a decorated paper towel tube works great for kids!).
Explore more about Hubble at nasa.gov/hubble.
Other Resources to Explore the Night Sky at Home
  • There are tons of great, free stargazing apps. Many folks recommend SkyView Lite to start.
  • NASA’s Space Place is the go-to site for activities and resources for kids, families and educators to explore astronomy. NASA also launched K-4 lesson plans for STEM at Home.
  • Check out NASA Solar System Ambassador and JSP Partner, Dan Price’s Starpointe Astronomy blog about “Astronomy at Home”. Dan creates blog content weekly and will add an observing section so people know what to look for in the sky.
  • You can also read Dan Price’s astronomy columns that appear weekly in the State Journal (Frankfort), the Sentinel News (Shelbyville), and the Kentucky Standard (Bardstown).
  • And of course, there’s the NASA website. It’s your gateway to everything spacey.

Feel free to contact Dan Price with any specific questions at [email protected] JSP is part of the NASA Museum Alliance! More dates to be scheduled throughout the year.

If you appreciate the virtual resources that we share, please consider donating online. We request a $10 donation for in-person Night Sky Tours at the Park. JSP programs are sponsored in part by Expree Credit Union. Thank you!
