First Sunday SELF-GUIDED Nature Tour: Mindful Bird Walk

First Sunday SELF-GUIDED Nature Tour: Mindful Bird Walk

Sunday, April 5

Due to JSP’s decision to temporarily suspend all in-person programming due to COVID-19, our monthly First Sunday Guided Nature Tour will be self-guided in the location of your choosing. (The Explore Kentucky Initiative also has compiled a list of open Kentucky Natural Areas during the COVID-19 pandemic.)

This month’s nature tour was to focus on birds, so we encourage you to go on a bird walk! Observing birds is a great way to practice mindfulness and be present during this challenging time. Here is a simple way to enjoy your mindful bird walk:

  1. Choose where you want to walk. Birds are everywhere. But if you want to maximize the amount and variety of birds you can see, keep in mind that in general birds enjoy varied habitat of open field/meadow, shrubs, and forest edges. Birds are most active at dawn and dusk.
  2. Consider bringing a pocket bird ID book or a downloaded birding app such as Audubon Bird Guide: North America; a journal to sketch, note what you observe, note questions, and reflect; and binoculars. Please note that none of these is required to have an enjoyable and successful bird walk.
  3. Commit to walking slowly and silently. Turn your phone on silent. If you are comfortable, I suggest closing your eyes and listening to the sounds around you. Then, discern which sounds might be birds and mentally visualize their location in reference to you. Now, open your eyes. As you slowly walk in your path, notice where you see or hear birds. When called, find a “sit spot” and observe the bird activity around you. You may also want to explore how you feel or what personally comes to mind in relationship to this experience. (Now is a great time to take out that journal, if you brought it.)
  4. Walk, sit, observe, [reflect], repeat. Let your curiosity, and the beauty of birds, lead you.

Take a bird walk to relax, unplug, and reconnect to your relationship in nature.

If you appreciate the virtual resources that we share, please consider donating online. We request a $5 per person donation for in-person First Sunday Guided Nature Tours at the Park. JSP programs are sponsored in-part by Expree Credit Union. Thank you!
